Voluntary application of Ballast Water Management in Mediterranean region as from 1st January 2012

According with BMW.2/Circ.35 vessels before entering Mediterranean region or engaged in traffic between MED&Black Sea ports should voluntarily exchange ballast according with D-1 requirement of the ballast water management convention as from 1st January 2012.

Description of requirement
  • Vessels before entering or leaving Mediterranean through Suez or Gibraltar should:
  1. Exchange ballast 200nm from the nearest land and of depth at least 200m.
  2. When the above not possible due to operational or safety reasons then ballast exchange at least 50nm from nearest land and at least of 200m depth.
  • Vessels engaged in traffic between:
Ports within Mediterranean region
Ports in Black Sea and Read Sea
Ports in Black Sea and Mediterranean
Ports in Read Sea and Mediterranean
Should:
  1. Undertake ballast exchange as far as possible from land but at least 50nm from nearest land and of waters of at least 200m in depth.
  2. When the above not possible due to operational or safety reasons then ballast exchange region should be indicated by Port State

Vessels entering Mediterranean region should have a ballast water management plan according with MEPC.127(53).
